A terrible war ruled Nosgoth for several centuries. Humans against the undead, and it was up to mankind to gain the victory - almost at least. The vampire-plague was nearly extinct when the last one of them found a hiding-place in the Termagant Forest: Kain, nothing more than a very young vampire, a fledgeling. He was cruel and sadistic, a sarcasm monstrosity and his transformation from the living to the undead only strengthened his human character defect. He gained possession of the six strongest human enemies his kind ever had; the holy Serafan who are half warrior and half mage and turned the chosen but dead bodies into vampires. With his powerful sons, he began to rise an army of undead to defeat and enslave the whole world. Within one century mankind was completely oppressed and Nosgoth was ruled by the vampiric empire as of now. Kain brought oneself to the idol and god of everyone, even to his six "child's" and their clans of former created vampire-soldiers. For the next few centuries the world was changed to become more comfortable for the immortals. Human slaves had to set up large furnaces. Their thick, black smoke darkened the sky to keep out the dangerous sunlight. A sanctuary was build and large fortresses, too.

Everything could be fine. They had their kingdom-like territories, their clans and... piece. No more fights with humans, not one of them had to fear assassinations by vampire hunters. Nevertheless, dissatisfaction spread between them like a disease and boredom was it's pathogen. Their drive to fight was useless, now. Every resistance was destroyed, the enemies had been killed, enslaved or transformed. Nothing was left apart from their own endless life and the eternity itself, so they searched for something keeping them busy. Everyone of them was still dependent from blood, therefore they began to cultivate with their mortals. Like ordinary cattle, males and females were chosen to copulate. The new born humans were examined carefully for blood quality, strength and health - which was slightly different from one clan to the next. But in the end the result was always the same: if the check was successful the child could grew up to produce new mortals. But if the check failed it could become old enough to be castrated and it spends the rest of it's life to feed the vampires regular with it's blood.

Over the next centuries the slaves developed to a very strong and healthy race, quite not strong enough to rebel against their undead masters, but from time to time a couple of mortals escaped and fled. Some of them became vampire hunters and others tried to live a normal life. They hide themselves at the outermost borders of the empire, in the swamps and mountains to prevent the capture by vampire-patrols. In the hidden mankind began to expand a second time. They build small villages with massive wooden defense-fences smeared with grease and oil to stop bloodsuckers from climbing up the huge protection. Extremely magic-sensitive humans scanned the surrounding of the housing estates day and night, searching for transformed vampires trying to sneak inside unnoticed: up to the half of the undead was able to change the appearance - into mist, bat, wolf or human form. Some of them could transform into several phenotypes, but that possibility was only available to Kain and his six sons. Usually, they stayed within their fortresses being as well as the monarch and the dark father of their tribes in one person. But the exception proves the rule........

Nosgoth, in the year of Kain 958

I knew it was summer but I wasn't able to imagine how the sun looked like. I'd never seen that glowing star before, at the most as a blurred and pale plate behind all that smog. I was picking berries. The little bush was affected by magic to allow him bearing his sweet fruits nearly the whole year. My basket was almost filled up and I began to choose the last, big berries. That was the moment I heard noises to the left, a rustling of dried leaves and snapping of small branches. The alarming sounds steered my attention to the nearby edge of the forest. I stood up, still observing the area between the thick tree-trunks. The ubiquitous foggy haze affects me from deeper looks into the woods and I was getting nervous by the noises refusing to tear off. Then I saw something, stepping forward with slow paces: an animal. I held my breath and began to retreat slowly. It was a wolf, a very large one with a thick, black fur and bright yellow eyes. The way he held up his big head showed his self-confidence and knowledge of being a dominant member of his pack. My heart was beating faster and harder and I thought about the possibility to escape him successfully.

The large beast went forward with very slow moves. It seemed to me as if the four-legged hunter tried to calm me down, as if he wanted to show me that he wasn't in the mood for an attack. My knees felt shaky and flabby but I forced myself to stay until the creature reached me. I stood stiff and motionless like a statue as he began sniffing at my feet and legs. The fact that I don't saw his tail left me thoughtful. For usual this animals showed their mood with tail and ears, but this one held up his ears only, the auricles turned forward. The creature surrounded me slowly, still sniffing. It was a tail-less individual. That gave me a little shock. I knew exactly what it meant to meet a tail-less wolf: it was a transformed vampire. And with that knowledge I noticed the slightly strange form of his hind legs, now. They looked a bit too human, like a two-legged being walking on all fours. But that was the only striking difference to an ordinary wolf. Nevertheless, my body seemed to turn into ice. I was completely unable to move in any way.
