Achterflaptekst: In "De Ondergang van de Familie Boslowits" zowel als in "Werther Nieland" komt een onbevangenheid tot uiting, die in mijn latere werk ontbreekt. Toch denk ik wel eens dat er een diepe verwantschap bestaat tussen "De Ondergang" (1946) en "Op weg naar het einde" (1963), al is de stijl van het eerste oneindig veel weerlozer en weemoediger, en ontbreekt nog grotendeels de agressiviteit van mijn latere werk. Van "Werther Nieland" herinner ik mij nog heel goed, dat ik, toen ik de novelle had voltooid er zelf een heel geringe dunk van had, en dat ik, bij de inzending aan De Vrije Bladen, in 1949, het niet waarschijnlijk achtte dat de redactie het zou aanvaarden. Sedertdien echter is het me steeds dierbaarder geworden, en ik beschouw het thans als een misschien nooit door mij te overtreffen hoogtepunt in mijn werk. Gerard Kornelis van het Reve WERTHER NIELAND Deze novelle werd bij de eerste verschijning nauwelijks opgemerkt. Inmiddels wordt 'Werther Nieland' door sommigen als het hoogtepunt in het werk van Reve gezien. Het is het verhaal over de elfjarige Elmer die door geheime clubs - waarvan hij zelf voorzitter is - op te richten de werkelijkheid om zich heen probeert te bedwingen. Elmer ontmoet Werther Nieland, die (tijdelijk) clublid mag worden. Als Elmer bij Werther over de vloer komt, wordt hij geconfronteerd met het ongewone en voor hem niet te duiden gedrag van Werthers moeder. Psychologisch - de beschrijving vanuit de belevingswereld van het kind - en stilistisch is deze novelle meesterlijk. In deze novelle is er de verhaaltechniek waarbij de observatie en de vermelding van suggestieve details belangrijker zijn dan enige vorm van explicitering.
