Acolyte Press - The Acolyte Reader Series 01-12 (1986-1996)

When the Coltsfoot Press went bankrupt in 1986, its editor, Frank Torey, who was also an editor for its parent company, Spartacus, founded the Acolyte Press in Amsterdam.

The tide had already begun to turn against boylovers and anything that might link that persuasion to "gay" movements or activities, but even so, Torey was able to keep AP going for 10 years until his death in 1996. By then the tide had overflowed the promenade, and it's hard to see how AP could have survived much longer even if Frank Torey had lived. His legacy is probably better represented on TNT than anywhere else on the net, although we do have a few gaps in our collection.

Much of what we have is either in PDF format or, if there's an ebook, it's a bit out of date. So one of my current projects is to update our collection and present the best quality ebooks I'm capable of. That's not a fast process, obviously, but over the months you'll see the books appearing one by one.

For most, I have a PDF for reference which usually provides a cover image. Where there isn't a PDF there's some sort of image available, even if it isn't the original cover. You should bear in mind also that these were published as pulp paperbacks, and the standards of presentation and editing were not high. I'll have done my best to correct errors and leave you with something of good quality, but please understand the circumstances.

This thread is for the 12 volumes in the Acolyte Reader series, and I'll add each one as I finish it.

Abel, Barbara - Mothers' Instinct (2003)

David and Laetitia Brunelle and Sylvain and Tiphaine Geniot are inseparable friends and next-door neighbors in a pretty, tranquil suburb. Their sons Milo and Maxime, born in the same year, grow up together as close as brothers. But when Maxime is killed in an accident, their idyllic world shatters. Maxime's parents, Sylvain and Tiphaine, are consumed by grief and bitterness, while David and Laetitia are wracked with guilt for their role in the tragedy. Soon the couples are barely speaking, although they maintain a polite facade.

Then a mysterious series of "accidents" begins to happen to Milo, raising Laetitia's suspicions. Are their former best friends trying to punish them by threatening their son? As an increasingly paranoid Laetitia frantically tries to protect Milo from harm, the little civility left between the two families curdles into outward hostility. Is Laetitia just imagining things? Or are Sylvain and Tiphaine secretly conspiring to exact their revenge . . . and if so, who will pay?

In her American debut, blockbuster Belgian author Barbara Abel plunges into the deepest, darkest corners of her characters' hearts and minds to explore the limits of friendship, the overwhelming power of maternal love, and how far hate, fear, and vengeance can drive us. Tense and blood-chilling, with a surprising final twist, Mothers' Instinct will keep you on edge until the final page.

Set in Ghana, this high school saga about two basketball players is salacious and sad and whimsically hopeful. It's about being who you are and the relief that it brings, along with the pain and the estrangement, but also the mending when friends step up to fill in the gaps. There's an easy Ghanaian rhythm to the narration and the dialogue, which makes this tale of first love and coming-out fresh. And there's a resolution on the beach of brown rocks that shows a triumph of character, echoing 'cross the waves long after a change in the tide.

Quote:
Sehr empfehlenswert.
